Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book onto a course?

Please contact me stating which course you wish to join and I will send you the details to send payment to.  Please note that your space will not be reserved until you have sent payment.

Can I try a class before committing to the full course?

I am happy for students try the first class of the course before deciding whether to join, but this will only be possible where there are spaces left on the course, as I must give priority to those who are willing to pay for the course in advance.  If you would like to do this, please contact me and I will contact you just before the course starts to let you know whether there will be space.  If you decide not to continue with the course, the trial class will be charged at £9.

Can I take the class as a drop-in?

Unfortunately it is not possible to take the classes on a drop-in basis.  This is to enable the class to progress and build on content from week-to-week.

What if I have to miss a class?

The content and progress of each course is designed to enable you to be able to catch up if you miss a week.  In-person classes will not be recorded, but videos of longer sequences may be available in some cases (if there is something in particular you would like me to record, please let me know at least 2 hours before the class you are going to miss).  Online classes will be recorded and the link to stream or download the recording sent to all students on the course each week, so you can take the class at a later date. Unfortunately it will not be possible to offer a refund where you are unable to attend a class.

Can I cancel my booking or transfer my payment to a future course?

The deadline to cancel for a refund will be 15 days before the course is due to start.  After this point, all payments will be non-refundable and cannot be transferred to a future course.

Where is the venue for in-person weekly classes?

The venue is BN1 Arts, Vantage Point, New England Road, BN1 4GW.  The studio is mirrored and well-ventilated with a floor purpose built for tap dancing.  For those using public transport, BN1 Arts is just a few minutes' walk from both Brighton train station and all bus routes stopping on London Road.

Is there parking at the venue?

Further information tbc.

What shoes should I wear?

For tap classes: tap shoes are obviously ideal, but to start off, any flat or low-heeled shoes that don’t grip the floor will be fine.  The most important thing is that you can balance comfortably and brush the ball of the foot over the floor without resistance.

For solo jazz/Charleston: any flat or low-heeled shoes that doesn’t grip the floor will be fine.  The most important thing is that you can balance comfortably and that the sole allows you to slide and spin without too much resistance (this is especially important for 1920's Charleston).  Leather, suede or hard plastic soles are best; rubber soles can be fine if worn smooth, or you can ask a cobbler to cover the sole with suede.

Where can I get tap shoes?

Our nearest dancewear shop is Dancia (in Portslade) or you can buy online.  Any style is fine, but most of my students go for the jazz tap style as these are comfortable and easy to balance in and tend to have better quality heel and toe taps than the cheaper lace-up mary jane style.  Higher heels are best avoided if you are a beginner.

What if there is another lockdown?

If a lockdown is announced part-way through the course, classes will move online.  Unfortunately it will not be possible to offer a refund where you are unable to attend an online class, but recordings of online classes will be made available so that you can download them and do them at a time to suit you.
